Lakeshore Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that promotes independence for persons with physically disabling conditions and opportunities to pursue active healthy lifestyles.The Foundation offers a wide range of fitness, recreation, athletic and education programs to children and adults who experience diagnostic conditions including spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, amputation, and visual impairment.The Foundation also serves persons who have been diagnosed with arthritis, diabetes, chronic back pain, cardiac conditions, and many other related disorders.

Membership

Exercise is important for everyone to maintain their health, but it is imperative for those who experience physically disabling conditions.

Lakeshore Foundation's fitness, recreation and education center offers unparalleled health and wellness opportunities to people with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions such as spinal cord injury, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, stroke, limb loss, diabetes, arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and visual impairment.  Individuals age 60 and over are also eligible to join. Family members of eligible individuals may also enroll in membership.

Our facility includes a heated indoor aquatics center, featuring two pools; a 6,000 square foot fitness area with free-weights, strength training, cardio machines, and an aerobics studio; a three-court gym and indoor Olympic MONDO surface 200-meter track in our spacious field house; 10-lane archery and marksmanship range; and spacious men's and women's locker room facilities with assisted dressing areas. Your membership includes access to all areas of the facility, as well as all land-based and aquatics classes and youth, athletics and recreation programs.

 Each year, professionals at Lakeshore Foundation serve more than 3,000 individuals with physical disabilities; from babies 6 months old to men and women well into their 90's.  Lakeshore meets their critical needs for access to exercise and recreation opportunities-needs that can't be met elsewhere.  We are setting a standard in this country and changing the perception of people with disabilities.

*Family Health & Wellness
Lakeshore Foundation offers membership opportunities to individuals, couples, families, seniors and youth with physical disabilities in the greater Birmingham community.  Membership at Lakeshore Foundation includes access to our state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics facility, as well as land-based and aquatics classes, and youth athletics and recreation programs.

*Youth
Youth ages 6 months-21 years with physical disabilities make up Lakeshore Foundation's dynamic youth program that includes a variety of land and aquatics recreation activities and classes, Learn-to-Swim classes, holiday and weekend camps, sports activities and much more!  We offer a number of weekend activities for families that don't live as close to Lakeshore.  Participation in these special activities does not require membership at Lakeshore Foundation.

*Lima Foxtrot Programs for Injured Military
Lakeshore Foundation's Lima Foxtrot programs include a number of weekend-long camps that bring injured military personnel and their families from across the country to Alabama.  Each camp, referred to as an operation, is offered at no charge for the participants.  Activities include Operation Rise & Conquer, an outdoor adventure weekend held at Lake Martin; Operation Night Vision, a camp specifically designed for injured troops who have suffered blindness or visual impairment; Operation X-Sports for servicemen and women interested in extreme sports; and Operation Endurance, which provides daily fitness programs to recently injured military personnel returning home to Alabama. 

*Recreation
Hunting, fishing, paddling, sled hockey, shooting sports, handcycling and water skiing are just a sample of the indoor and outdoor opportunities available.  Even if you don't live in the greater Birmingham area, you are welcome to join us on many of our recreational trips.  You do not have to be a member of Lakeshore Foundation to participate in a number of our recreation programs. 

*Competitive Athletics
Competitive athletics at Lakeshore Foundation for youth and adults provide an outlet for competitive drive, enhance independence and contribute to the athlete's overall health and well-being.  Opportunities include wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, swimming, marksmanship, wheelchair tennis and track & field.

*Research & EducationAs an organization that strives to provide cutting-edge services to individuals with physical disabilities, it is Lakeshore's responsibility to not only provide quality programs that lead to healthy, active, independent lifestyles, but also to show that these programs have the predicted benefit. 

What are your Hours of Operation?

Our operating hours are: Monday-Friday 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How do I become a member?

Just call our Information Line at (205) 313-7400 or stop by during operating hours for more information.  We also invite you to take a tour of our facility to learn more about enrolling in membership.  Tours are available Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  No appointment necessary.

Will you help me find the right activities?

 Fitness, aquatics and recreation specialists are on hand every day to ensure that you make the best and most appropriate choices for your fitness and wellness needs. We offer a variety of general and diagnostic-specific class offerings in each program area. Talk to a specialist today to begin meeting your fitness goals.

Will family members be able to join me in the program?

YES! We invite you to bring your family to Lakeshore to pursue fitness goals together. Family members living in your household are eligible to join with you, whether or not they have a physical disability or chronic health condition.  Many of our youth programs are also open to siblings who do not. have a disability. 

Are there age restrictions to any programs?

No. Our programs are designed to be suitable from youth into active maturity. Some programs will be tailored to meet the needs of particular age groups, but there are many choices for all age groups and ability levels.

Will I receive personal attention from the staff?

Yes. We are committed to maintaining the quality personal service you expect. We provide a qualified and experienced staff, many of who are considered national experts.

Is there plenty of parking?

Yes. Our level lot offers parking that is both convenient and accessible.

Are there plenty of showers, bathrooms, and lockers?

Yes. We have taken into consideration the need to have more showers, toilets, lockers, as well as space and privacy, in our locker rooms. We also offer two assisted/family dressing rooms located near the pool and fitness center, each equipped with a shower, toilet, and lavatory.

What if I cannot afford to pay?

As always, Lakeshore Foundation is committed to serving the needs of persons with physically disabling conditions, regardless of their ability to pay full fees. Financial assistance is available for full or partial scholarships based on documented need.
